The Unknown Flower



Down the canyon with the dogs. Another cold and rainy day.

Third Graders are fun. The other day Jazmine came home to say that she had to do a report on a famous person. She was given a list of names by her teacher. She chose John Muir. Atta girl!

But not even Joni could identify the flower above. Can someone save me the effort of looking through these gosh darned flower books to identify it?

Sure looks like some kind of laurel. I only know the laurel species of northeastern US, not the western varieties. But you could start by looking up laurels. Notice how the stamens curl back and fit into little niches in the petals. When a pollinator lands, they spring loose and bop the pollinater's back with pollen. After a while, they curl back again and reset their springs. Cool!
