Walk #146: A Walk With A Friend..

A work colleague: R.O. came up to the homestead to help me build straw bale walls today. We worked hard. The hardest part was trying to figure out how to re-tie a bale, to make it fit. After working most of the day, we had a fine meal on the barbecue: tri tip steaks, Yukon gold mashed potatoes with garlic, salad.

After dinner, with bellies full, we took a walk.

I was able to show my friend, my daily walk. Gave a tour of this bizarre ridge with the "off the grid" eccentrics who choose to live here. Told him stories about the mountain lions, the bears and the Apocalyptics. A fun time.

Walking with a friend is an under rated pleasure. When was the last time you took a walk with a friend?

I'm tired -- had trouble sleeping. But still took a ride. I went to Dan & Jill's, off-grid friends. Dan had commented on a quote I'd mentioned, and I thought he might enjoy the catalog from www.northernsun.com ,which has lots of great bumper stickers and shirts. It was early, so I just tucked it under their windshield wiper.

I like having a purpose for my rides -- see friends, get an errand done, see a client. But I also always enjoy it when I don't wait for the purpose, but just get out in the air and sunshine. It's a gorgeous island day, and worth getting out into.

That is quite the fancy odometer/speedometer you have, Ian. Does it have GPS too?

Hi Allan,

It's a pretty basic bike computer -- there are much fancier ones out there. No GPS, though I have that on my iPhone if I want to use it. I need to make a mount on my handlebars for the iphone... ;-)

I went to town this morning on the 8:30 boat and came back on the 9:45. Got plumbing fittings for our greywater system, and some other odds and ends, plus some groceries.

I love bicycling for many reasons, and one is that it allows people to connect. This morning in my short ride, I had these connections, and more:
* Stopped to talk with Jill, who was out walking the dog, about the catalog I left, and heard how much she and Dan laughed at the slogans.
* Joked with Bob who was working on the ferry.
* Long talk with someone, which started over my bike windshield but ended up about neodymium magnets, and led to my newest invention, the magnetic bike drafting/pusher -- look for a non-patent soon... ;-)
* Talked with Jim about the old ferry Almar (my bike has a bumper sticker that says I miss it), which is probably up in Alaska, where he saw it some years ago, and went on to talk about his RV trip to CA, fishing, etc.
* Talked with Howard about his activism.
* Talked politics on the ferry with Dave.
* Waved to a few dozen people, and smiled at others.

Ya just can't get that experience cooped up in a car...
